This image shows the capillary network in a 1 mm² section of mouse cortex after an ischemic stroke (a stroke caused by a narrowed or blocked artery). The dark region in the centre is the damaged area or lesion. The regenerated capillary segments in the surrounding area tend to grow towards the ischemic core. The colour of the capillary segments represents the orientation with respect to the direction of the ischemic centre.

Diffusion Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Brain tumour resection at early stages can effectively reduce the mortality rate for patients. In addition to conventional structural MRI, diffusion MRI can be used to extract information regarding the wiring of the brain, and thus can be used to plan tumour resection to better define the extent of resection and reduce functional loss after surgery. This image shows the brain tumour in red and the surrounding white matter fibre tracts that are responsible for various daily functions of our body. In a collaboration between Canadian and Norwegian researchers, this brain circuitry information is used in combination with ultrasound imaging during surgery to ensure the safety and success of the surgical procedure to remove the tumour.
